3-15-23 gop lawmakers block ‘conversion therapy’ ban

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republicans who control the Wisconsin Assembly have voted to allow therapists and others to attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. The discredited practice is known as conversion therapy. Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin have been trying to stop it from being banned. The Legislature’s Republican-controlled rules committee blocked a state licensing board in January from banning the therapy. The GOP advanced a bill to the Assembly floor Tuesday to sustain the committee decision. The GOP didn’t pass it out of concerns that Gov. Tony Evers would veto it. The chamber voted 61-35 to send the bill to committee. The move ensures practitioners can engage in conversion therapy until at least 2024.
