The World Health Organization on Friday downgraded the COVID-19 pandemic saying it no longer qualifies as an emergency. The announcement marks a symbolic end to the devastating coronavirus pandemic that triggered once unthinkable lockdowns, upended economies and killed millions of people worldwide. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the announcement was expected. “Probably some people hearing that now, probably expected to hear that months ago,” Mueller told WFDL news. The World Health Organization noted that the pandemic hasn’t come to an end despite the emergency phase being over, saying that thousands of people are still dying from the virus every week.
