Nobody was injured in a fire that damaged a Waupun apartment complex. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 1100 Rock Avenue around 1:30pm Wednesday to find fire running the entire length of the building. Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says several apartment units sustained varying degrees of damage. “We have three units with moderate to severe fire damage, a fourth unit that has moderate fire damage, four units with varying degrees of water damage,” DeMaa told WFDL news. DeMaa says the majority of the eight units on the north side of the building were not impacted by the fire. DeMaa says it’s fortunate that nobody was injured. “Quick thinking by the (apartment) manager. As soon as she smelled smoke, she stuck her head out, saw the fire and immediately went down and pulled the fire alarm, started beating on doors letting folks know they needed to evacuate and dialed 9-1-1.” He says the Senior Center has been turned into a temporary shelter for the displaced tennants in the 16 unit complex. DeMaa says the cause of the fire remains under investigation but appears to have started on an upstairs outdoor balcony.
