5-25-23 fdl north main street corridor plan

The future redevelopment of the Fond du Lac North Main Street Corridor including the entrance to Lakeside Park was the focus at Wednesday night’s Fond du Lac city council meeting.   A consultant presented a report encouraging the city to be proactive in the pursuit of the investment in important commercial and mixed use corridors.  Much of the attention has centered on what to do with the former Saputo Cheese property on the corner of North Main and Scott Streets.  The report says  the Saputo property is a premier destination site within the corridor, and suggests a 30,000 to 60,000 square foot building along the northern edge of the site with an anchor commercial and or entertainment  tennant, conference center, public use, or other destination tennant.   The report recommends the building(s) is multi-storied with opportunities to take advantage of views of Lakeside Park and Lake Winnebago.  The upper floors could be a hotel and/or residential units.  Other ideas include a four story residential structure.  The report says the city will need to take an active role  where they can through public investment and development incentives to get the private sector excited about the opportunities in the corridor.   Consultant Steve Tremlet says  it’s a long term plan, 10 to 20 years out, and any plan will review how the property may change over time.   For North Main Street properties not owned by the city any  recommendations would be geared more toward guiding development.
