An SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac chaplain has been awarded the April 2023 Donation Advocate Super Hero (DASH) Award from UW Organ and Tissue Donation (UW OTD). One DASH Award is presented each month to a hospital staff member who provides extraordinary care to a donor patient and or a donor patient’s family. Chaplain Peter Capoyianes was nominated by an organ procurement coordinator from UW OTD. “Everything we do at St. Agnes Hospital is always for the patients and their families, and our organ donation cases highlight the culture we have built here,” according to Chaplain Peter. “Our teams in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and Surgery help make these expressed wishes for donation a reality and the bedside staff are the ones who share and help accommodate the family’s needs. “While I am honored to receive this award, it truly is a reflection of all the wonderful work done here by our staff,” he adds. “St. Agnes Hospital is a truly special place.” A caregiver is typically nominated for the DASH award after a specific patient case. Chaplain Peter was recognized for his support of two families during the week leading up to Good Friday. The nomination shares, “Peter was able to support both families throughout the days leading up to the OR, helping to create memories, and coordinating honor walks at two different times on Good Friday. Supporting two donor cases at the same time is a challenge and supporting two grieving families through the process requires compassion and dedication. Peter has been a strong donation advocate and these families were expertly cared for because of his coordination, support, and big heart.” With his help, the patients donated five organs to five recipients.
