Fond du Lac, Wis. – Fond du Lac High School students in the school’s German program have the opportunity to take part in an authentic learning experience overseas. This learning experience is the Young Economic Solutions (YES!) competition in Germany, where students will be immersed in German language and culture. Students from Fond du Lac High School and STEM Academy will compete against other students from Germany and around the world. Only three districts from the United States were selected for the program. Students will develop a solution to an economic/social/environmental issue. In Hamburg, students will present their solutions and field questions from other students and experts in the relevant fields. All the presentations and questions will be conducted in German. Fond du Lac students are working with Professor Alexander Hillert from the Leibniz Institute for financial-market research on the topic of getting more people to invest responsibly in the stock market. Being a part of the YES! competition gives FDL-SD students the chance to formulate their own ideas in an evidence-based way in cooperation with researchers, present them in the context of a large conference and discuss them with other school teams. Additionally, students get to know scientific institutes and researchers, and have the opportunity to talk to high-ranking personalities from politics, business and society. Students attending will depart on Saturday, September 16, 2023 to take part in the competition that will take place on September 17-20, 2023 in Hamburg, Germany. Winning teams from the competition will be invited to Berlin, where the winning team’s idea will be placed on the political agenda. For more information on YES!, visit young-economic-solutions.org.
