6-26-23 tax cuts and a uw squeeze

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Republican-authored Wisconsin state budget includes a $3.5 billion income tax cut covering all income levels, a cut to the University of Wisconsin System and more money for public K-12 and private voucher schools. The GOP-controlled Legislature is expected to pass the plan next week, sending it to Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. He had promised to veto any budget that includes a cut to UW, but the GOP plan gives the university a chance to get the money later. Evers also made a deal with Republicans to get a $1 billion increase in K-12 school funding. The plan also raises salaries for state workers.
