Nobody was injured following a chemical leak in Fond du Lac. Friday morning Fond du Lac firefighters were called to Milk Specialties on Tompkins Street for a report of a yellow smoke plume near the shipping docks where semi-trucks off-load chemicals. The Fond du Lac Haz Mat Team was dispatched and the building was evacuated. An investigation determined a major failure in a hose resulted in nitric acid being sprayed onto drums of a surfactant and animal by-product resulting in a violent reaction creating the plume. The Fire Department says the quick actions of the truck operator to shut off the equipment prevented spread. Haz Mat crews were on scene for approximately 5 hours. An environmental company was called for clean-up.
