The Cleveland Browns announced in a statement on Wednesday the release of defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. News of the decision comes shortly after it was reported the 22-year-old was under police investigation for allegedly assaulting a woman and showing her he had a gun.

According to Fox 8 News, two women who said they know Winfrey saw him in a hotel lobby, leading one of them to yell an insult at him when he didn’t acknowledge them. The women reportedly claim he then became angry and made threats while flashing the firearm. Video from the incident was released Tuesday night via Instagram Stories, which seems to show Winfrey following the women in downtown Cleveland. The caption read, in part, “Perrion Winfrey just chased us barefoot out of the nine, pointed his [gun emoji], stole both of my phones and pulled off.” A voice can repeatedly be heard asking in one of the videos: “You don’t think it’s on me? I will smack the s*** out of both of y’all. Perrion, what are you about to do?” The same Instagram user also posted a photo saying she was scared to go home, before sharing another photo appearing to show a bruise on her neck and a caption: “This is what you stand for?!?? @clevelandbrowns.”

Winfrey has had a string of incidents in recent months; he was arrested in April in Houston for assaulting a woman he was dating. The victim was subsequently granted a protection order against Winfrey and the charges were dropped last month.

The Browns 2022 fourth-round pick recorded 22 combined tackles, one tackle for loss and half a sack during his rookie season.
