MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has vetoed two packages of Republican-backed bills that would have set new requirements for unemployment benefits and prevented local governments from banning gas-powered engines. In veto messages, Evers accused the GOP-controlled Legislature of trying to undermine local governments and make things harder for people searching for work. The governor also signed two bills on Friday making the parole process more transparent and setting harsher penalties for people who sell drugs that lead to an overdose. Republicans have criticized the governor as being soft on crime, and it became a hot topic in Evers’ reelection campaign last year.
