10-31-23 wisconsin congressman grothman says new house speaker benefitted by not being in a leadership role

Wisconsin Republican congressman Glenn Grothman says he’s glad congressman Mike Johnson has been elected speaker.   Grothman says Johnson is very well liked by fellow Republicans and everyone wishes him well.  Grothman says Johnson benefitted from not being in a leadership position where he had to make enemies.  Grothman says Johnson was never in a powerful enough position  “to have to punish people or tell people what to do.”   That may change by November 17, the deadline when congress must fund the government again or risk a federal shutdown.  Grothman says he doesn’t believe Johnson will allow the government to shut down, even though he voted to do just that earlier.  “It does present Mike with a problem, because there are alot of people who say we should never have a continuing resolution,”  Grothman told WFDL news.   But Grothman says the public will not want the Republicans to be party to that.     “Mike is one of those people,  in the past, he would not vote to continue to fund the government.  So now he’s going to have to tell other Republicans please vote to continue funding the government even though that’s something I didn’t use to do.”
