Wisconsin Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson says the new house speaker is an extraordinary individual. Republican Mike Johnson was elected the new speaker of the House last week. Senator Johnson says he looks forward to meeting with speaker Johnson this week. “Everybody likes him, nobody dislikes him,” Johnson told WFDL news. “A man of faith, a sound conservative. I’m really looking forward to working with him.” By November 17, the Congress must fund the government again or risk a federal shutdown. Johnson says he hopes the House passes a clean continuing resolution. “The new speaker said he would be open to going to April 15th, I think that’s an appropriate time. That puts a little more pressure on us and gives us a few extra days in case we don’t get all the work done.” Last week the senate voted down an amendment intended to prevent future government shutdowns. Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray (D-Wash.) argued that the amendment would make work to fund the government “way harder” and allow members who have a proclivity for obstructing government spending efforts “to ignore their responsibility” and block new appropriations bills.
