11-7-23 better business bureau research shows young adults lose more money to scams than older age groups

Often times we hear about scammers preying on the elderly, but new Better Business Bureau research shows contrary to what you may think young adults report losing more money to scams than older age groups.   Better Business Bureau in Wisconsin president and CEO, Jim Temmer says the report found that employment scams continue to be the riskiest scams for people ages 18-24,  making up almost 30-percent of scams reported by this age group to the BBB scam tracker.  Temmer says young adults were more likely to report being targeted by text message or internet messaging than other age groups.   Contact methods with the highest likelihood of a monetary loss included website and social media.   This group also reported a higher percentage of scams targeting them on Instagram and X (formerly twitter) than other age groups.  Other risky scams for 18-24 year olds include online purchases, cryptocurrency, rental, investment, fake check, phishing, romance, advance fee loan and credit repair or debt relief.
