MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin environmental officials have released a survey that found 71% of samples from shallow private wells were contaminated with PFAS chemicals. The Department of Natural Resources, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the state hygiene laboratory conducted the survey in the summer and fall of 2022. The DNR released the results Friday. The survey sampled 450 wells that reached no deeper than 40 feet across the state. PFAS were detected in 71% of samples. About 99% of the samples contained PFAS levels above the state’s recommended limit and 96% contained levels above limits federal officials are considering adopting.
