The Fond du Lac County Sheriff says a teenage boy arrested following a high speed chase in a stolen car was involved in a social media fad that has been plaguing bigger cities like Milwaukee. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the 14 year old boy admitted to specifically targeting KIA vehicles for theft because they can be relatively easy to hotwire. Waldschmidt says the juveniles refer to themselves as the “KIA Boys” – teenagers who have used a particular hack to steal cars. “This hack has become very widespread on social media,” Waldschmidt told WFDL news. “Literally thousands of cars are being stolen across the country.” Waldschmidt says many of these kids are too young to even have a driver’s license. He says they don’t do it for money or to keep the car, they do it for the joy rides. The juvenile admitted to breaking into and hot wiring a second vehicle the night before, abandoning it after crashing in a ditch on Pioneer Road.
