Local officials are reacting to the shooting at an Iowa high school on students’ first day back in class after their annual winter break. Authorities say a 17-year-old opened fire killing a sixth-grader and wounding five others in Perry, Iowa, a small town about 40 miles northwest of Des Moines. Rosendale-Brandon School District superintendent Wayne Weber says his heart goes out to those involved. Weber says locally school officials meet monthly to discuss different scenarios. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it’s “devastating.” The Dallas County Sheriff said an active shooter was reported at Perry High School before school started on Thursday and officers responded about seven minutes later. The shooting occurred in the backdrop of the Iowa caucuses and not far from where Republican candidates were campaigning.
