1-24-24 fdl school board creates new administrative position to oversee ell students

The Fond du Lac School District is taking steps to address a growing number of English Language Learning students.  The Fond du Lac School Board has approved the creation of a Director of English Language Learning and Billingual Education.   Superintendent Dr. Jeff Fleig says the creation of this position is long overdue.  He says currently the District has been asking an administrator to take on this role in addition to their regular duties.   Dr. Fleig says the number of ELL students has grown by more than 200 over the last four years.   “We have 624 students in the District right now who are English Language Learners.  That does not include students where English is a second language, but have already matriculated out of the English Language Learning program,”  Dr. Fleig told WFDL news.  “I believe our students where English is their primary language is roughly 15% of our school district population.”   Dr. Fleig says he anticipates that growth will continue as people move to Fond du Lac County for jobs in farming, manufacturing and other industries.
