The Fond du Lac County Sheriff says additional sheriff’s deputies are needed for the safety of the community and the officers. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the data shows his office is short-staffed compared to other comparable departments. The county board last week approved the hiring of three new deputies. Waldschmidt says the plan is to hire 12 new deputies over the next three years. “I know 12 sounds like a big number and it certainly is a big number. There’s a cost associated with that, but safety is not a cheap or inexpensive venture,” Waldschmidt told WFDL news. “When you look at where we rank just to get to the midpoint of those ten comparable counties we would need to hire 19 patrol deputies.” Waldschmidt says the total investment would top $1 million, but says that can be achieved without a tax increase.
