The Fond du Lac School District superintendent says he is willing to reevaluate the future of the citywide spelling bee. Following the recent competition, the District announced it would no longer be holding the spelling bee in the future. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Fleig says it became an issue of time and resources. “We had an administrator who this would take them away from their daily work of running the school,” Dr. Fleig told WFDL news. “I think we just got to the point to where we said I don’t see the value of this as a leader.” Dr. Fleig says he understands that for many kids who participated the spelling bee was something they looked forward to. He says he is willing to reevaluate continuing the program, but he says there has to be shared ownership with schools outside of the District who participate. “We have seven different entities including ourselves and I think we need to rotate it,” Dr. Fleig said. “We’ll reach out to them. If they are not interested the district is not going to carry the torch every year. It just can’t.”
