4-30-24 thousands of women not receiving recommended mammograms

Thousands of women between ages 50 and 74 are not receiving life-saving mammograms,  according to new federal data.   Researchers from the CDC found about one-third of socially vulnerable women are missing recommended mammograms.  Radiologist Dr. Steve Falkner with Radiology Associates of the Fox Valley says in Fond du Lac annual mammograms are generally very accessible, easy to obtain and very affordable, regardless of whether a woman has insurance.   Dr. Falkner says mammogram screenings are a basic health need that should be available to all women.  Dr. Falkner says in Fond du Lac walk-in mammograms are offered.   Breast cancer causes more than 40,000 deaths among women in the US each year,  according to the CDC.  Dr. Falkner says it’s sad that while breast cancer death rates are decreasing, black women and women with low incomes are more likely t o die from breast cancer.   “We will see that more commonly here that some of these people in the more vulnerable social groups will present with more advanced disease,”  Dr. Falkner told WFDL news.   “They will come in with a large mass in the breast that may have already spread and the reason being is that they weren’t coming in for mammograms prior to that.  It’s very sad.”
