The Waupun School District superintendent says the shooting of an armed student at a Mount Horeb Middle School last week is a horrible situation. Steve Hill says Mount Horeb seems like a typical small town in Wisconsin. “It really just tells you that students across the state and across the country…there are mental health issues, and we have concerns about how can we best help them,” Hill told WFDL news. Authorities say the student was armed with a pellet gun and Hill says the question is what if the student had been armed with a high powered weapon. “Would they have been able to gain access by shooting through a door or window? I don’t have the answer and I think what frustrates people is that there is no simple answer.” Hill says the state provided schools with safety grants in 2018. But at the same time he says schools should be a welcoming place and not turned into brick barracks with no windows. With that being said. He says many safety improvements have been made at Waupun schools. Wisconsin authorities are promising a thorough investigation into the Mount Horeb police shooting, while families in the community are coming together to comfort one another.
