New AAA research exposes the crash danger of spillover speeding. According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, raising speed limits on highways could lead to more crashes on nearby roads. State AAA spokesman Nick Jarmusz says the study found that drivers will be moving faster when transitioning onto local streets. Jarmusz says in general higher speeds result in more severe traffic crashes. Jarmusz says local streets are designed for slower speeds and diverse road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, not for speeding drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration speeding contributed to almost one-third of road fatalities in the past 20 years.
