6-24-24 fdl man sentenced to life in prison without parole in stabbing death

A Fond du Lac man convicted in the stabbing death of a Fond du Lac woman will never get out of prison.  At a hearing Friday Fond du Lac County Circuit judge Doug Edelstein sentenced Gary Davis to life in prison without the possibility of early release.  In February Davis was found guilty of First Degree Intentional Homicide in the November 2022 death of 51 year old Jacquelyn Rooney.  Her body was found covered in her locked apartment on East Merrill Avenue with 14 stab wounds and blunt force head injuries.  Davis was also found guilty of Mayhem with a dangerous weapon and Hiding a Corpse and was sentenced to 30 years in prison on those charges.   “This was a brutal and heartless murder in which the defendant showed no remorse,”  District Attorney Eric Toney stated.   “The defendant stole a mother from her kids and forced her parents to bury their daughter. The sentence of life in prison, without the possibility of release, will not bring Jackie back to her family but ensures he will have to think about his monstrous actions for the rest of life in a prison cell and he won’t be able to hurt others in our community.”   The state recommended life in prison without the possibility of release and a consecutive sentence of 49.5 years of initial confinement and 20 years of extended supervision, based on the brutality of the defendant’s actions. The state also recommended a fine of $20,000 on Count 2 and a $10,000 fine on Count 3.   It took the jury only 40 minutes to reach their verdicts.
