7-25-24 lockdowns coming to an end at wisconsin maximum security prisons

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections is signaling an end to lockdowns at two maximum-security prisons.  In-person visitation at Waupun Correctional Institution returned Monday, along with increased recreation time for inmates at Green Bay Correctional starting July 28th.  Corrections secretary Jared Hoy says  “both institutions continue to make positive changes as the facilities resume normal operations.”    Four inmates have died at the Waupun prison in the last year.   Months after Governor Tony Evers and DOC promised to lift restrictions and increase staff in Wisconsin prisons late last year, the two prisons are transitioning out of a state of “modified movement.”   Green Bay Correctional started offering increased recreation periods late last month with the aim of returning to normal operations at the end of this month.  The facility restarted in-person visitations in November.  Waupun Correctional will offer visits each weekday for a couple hours in the  morning and afternoon.
