8-14 Referendum Questions Fail To Pass

Voters rejected both constitutional amendment questions, which aimed to give the Legislature more control over spending federal funds.

The questions asked whether the Wisconsin Constitution should be amended:

“to provide that the legislature may not delegate its sole power to determine how moneys shall be appropriated?”
and “to prohibit the governor from allocating any federal moneys the governor accepts on behalf of the state without the approval of the legislature by joint resolution or as provided by legislative rule?”

Gov. Tony Evers in a statement defended his investments, saying he is “incredibly proud” to have directed funding to “support farmers, working families, and small businesses, expand high-speed internet, help prevent child care costs from getting any higher, improve community safety, provide school-based mental health services for kids, and invest in economic development projects that will benefit communities across our state for generations.”

“This was a referendum on our administration’s work and the future for Wisconsin we’ve been working hard to build together, and the answer is reflected in the people’s vote tonight,” Evers said.

The majority of voters in Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Waupaca County, and Waushara counties voted yes on both questions, while Dodge and Winnebago county voters rejected both questions.
