The Dodge County Sheriff says the arrest of a scammer from India is a first since he’s been in law enforcement. The 18 year old man faces charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and theft by false representation. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the man is accused of trying to steal more than $80,000 from a town of Lowell resident by posing as a Federal Trade Commission agent. Schmidt says the victim contacted law enforcement and the Sheriff’s Office set up a sting operation and an undercover officer arrested the suspect. Schmidt says the fact that the scammer was caught in the act is rare. “We’ve had other ones where we’ve been able to recover some of the funds that have been scammed, we have been able to free some accounts, a few of them we’ve been able to stop payment. If somebody is scammed we want people to notify us right away so we can help out with that,” Schmidt told WFDL news. “…but most of the time this type of thing doesn’t happen.”
