10-3-24 fdl fire and rescue assisting in search and rescue in north carolina

Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue is assisting with search and rescue operations in North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.  Fire Chief Erick Gerritson says Fire Lieutenant Shawn Kneeland was dispatched to North Carolina Friday as part of Wisconsin’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force known as Wisconsin Task Force 1.   In addition to Fond du Lac, members were deployed from fire departments in Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay, Janesville, Neenah/Menasha, and Superior.  Gerritson says its a scary situation.  “I don’t think anyone was prepared for that,”  Gerritson told WFDL news.  “When they say the perfect storm that’s literally it.  The devastation out there is unfathomable.”  Gerritson says it seems like the devastation is greater in North Carolina than in Florida where the Hurricane made landfall.   Gerritson says the recovery process is going to take years.  “Years to decades, I mean the infrastructure, the roads, the bridges, everything is gone.”
