US suicides last year remained at about the highest level in the nation’s history. Preliminary data shows that a little over 49,300 suicide deaths were reported in 2023. Just under 49,500 were reported in 2022. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says there were 15 suicide deaths in Fond du Lac County in 2023, and seven so far this year. Mueller says locally the highest suicide rate is for white males in their 30s and 40s. Suicide is the nation’s 11th leading cause of death overall. But its the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 20-34. The highest suicide rate for any group, by far, was in men ages 75 and older.
