11-1-24 childhood lead poisoning

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is encouraging all Wisconsinites to take steps by helping children get tested for lead exposure and checking homes for lead hazards.  Earlier this year DHS issued updated lead testing recommendations calling for all children to be tested for lead exposure at ages one and two.  Children between three and five who have not been previously tested should undergo screening for lead poisoning.  Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says children younger than six are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure.  Over the past decade, nearly 27,000 Wisconsin children under the age of six have been poisoned by lead.
