An ad hoc committee is recommending the Fond du Lac County Board consider a Fond du Lac County Justice facility…instead of just a new or expanded county jail. County executive Sam Kaufman says the committee will make a presentation with the recommendation at the February county board meeting. “The county board will have to make a decision. Do they want a full justice sytsem? Do they want to start off small with just a jail and go from there?” Kaufman told WFDL news. “We (county) only have a certain amount of borrowing capacity and we borrow up to a certain dollar amount. It does affect your overall (bond) rating, making sure that we always have a positive rating.” Under a justice facility, in addition to a new jail the building would include the Sheriff’s Office, Dispatch, District Attorney Office and court system. An initial cost estimate is in the neighborhood of $300 million. The facility would be located near the new county Highway Garage on Hickory Road.
