A convicted high risk child sex offender who cut off his GPS monitoring bracelet Monday and fled Fond du Lac has been captured. Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says detectives learned that Chad Maertz purchased a rental car and entered the vehicle into the FLOCK license plate recognition camera system. A short time later Maertz was arrested at a Walmart store in Germantown. Maertz served a 20 year sentence for attempted child abduction and was on extended supervision until August, 2032. He was convicted in the attempted abduction of a teenage girl as she was riding her bicycle along Highway 67 in the town of Ashford in August of 2002. Maertz then grabbed the victim’s bike and attempted to lure her into his vehicle. The girl was able to escape, running down the hill to safety. Maertz was also convicted in 1987 in Washington County for sexually assaulting two young girls.
