Fond du Lac’s ADVOCAP welcomed the public to an Open House Tuesday showcasing their new Opportunity Center and its impact for low-income individuals in the city. Since opening in November, the Center has quickly become a vital resource for those in Fond du Lac seeking to overcome challenges like homelessness, job loss, and financial instability. Through its comprehensive intake process, the Opportunity Center’s dedicated team has been able to work with approximately 30 participants per day, supporting over 100 individuals since November. The staff see themselves as “resource navigators,” working side-by-side with participants to break down barriers, connect them with essential resources, and develop individualized plans to address their needs. “Everybody’s story is different,” said Brenda Hull, Special Initiatives Manager at ADVOCAP. “Whether it’s homelessness, car repairs, or food shortages, we’re here to help participants navigate the system and take steps toward stability. It’s about giving people hope and the tools to move forward.” Hull noted the severe lack of affordable housing in the Fond du Lac area as a major barrier for many participants. “If you lost your job tomorrow, would you be stable without a support system? That’s the situation we’re seeing every day,” she explained. ADVOCAP Executive Director, Tanya Marcoe, emphasized the importance of community involvement in sustaining the Center’s operations. “The Opportunity Center’s work is powered by compassion and generosity. We’re helping people overcome barriers and crises, but we can’t do it alone. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, the community plays a vital role in helping the Center make a lasting impact in Fond du Lac.” The Opportunity Center offers assistance and connection to resources in areas such as shelter, employment, mental health, and meeting basic needs like food and hygiene. The Open House gave attendees a firsthand look at how the Center supports participants like Colton Langley, who has been connected to multiple services including FoodShare, cell phone service, mental health supports, Work N Wheels and business plan development through the Center. Langley shared of his experience with ADVOCAP, “Being around the right people, being around people who actually care about you, is very, very important… and I never want to lose that track again.” The Center relies entirely on private donations and continues to seek financial contributions, volunteers, and donations of food and essential items.
