3-13-25 firefighters battle large marsh fire in dodge county

A controlled burn got out of control in Dodge County, burning dozens of acres of marshland before it was finally extinguished.   Shortly before 2:30pm Wednesday firefighters from 10 departments were called to the scene on County Highway I, near state Highway 49 southeast of the state prison farm for a report of brush on fire.  Waupun Fire Chief BJ DeMaa says it didn’t take long for the fire to spread.  DeMaa says another challenge is that only so much water can be carried on the UTVs.  He says by the time the firefighters would come back with more water the fire had started again.  DeMaa estimates the fire burned between 50 to 60 acres of marshland.  He says it’s a reminder that people need to be careful when burning this time of year.  He says there is a lot of dead vegetation, and conditions are super dry.
