Republican state representative Jerry O’Connor of Fond du Lac says a bill that would require Wisconsin county sheriffs to comply with federal immigration authorities is something that most sheriffs are already doing. “I’m pleased to say that here in Fond du Lac County our law enforcement is doing what they have given an oath to perform and the end result is we have safe streets in Fond du Lac,” O’Connor told WFDL news. The bill would require sheriffs to request proof of legal presence from people being held in jail on felony charges, and report them to the US Department of Homeland Security. O’Connor says the bill targets people charged with felonies.
