3-27-25 dpi releases new map to track federal funding impact on wisconsin libraries

MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has created a new interactive map of federal funding resources for public library systems in the state.

Along with highlighting congressional districts, this new map illustrates the impact of federal funding on each of the 15 library systems in Wisconsin, including:

  • The number of libraries in each library system
  • Amount of public library system state aid and federal aid through the Library Services and Technology Act each system receives
  • Federal aid as a percentage of the system’s total funding

Federal funding and programs are vital to supporting the libraries and the lifelong learning journey of all those residing in Wisconsin.

These resources empower Wisconsin libraries to best serve their communities. They help fund important initiatives like interlibrary loan, summer reading programs, workforce development, and more.

In addition, federal funding supports consulting services to libraries throughout the state, cultivation of regional, statewide, and national collaborations, and innovative pilot programs aimed at improving library service for the people of Wisconsin.

The DPI encourages library leaders, educators, and community members to utilize these resources to better understand the crucial role of federal funding and communicate its importance to their communities.
