4-3-23 wi senate election could give gop impeachment power

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A special election to fill an open Wisconsin Senate seat could give Republican legislators enough votes to impeach Gov. Tony Evers and other civil officers. Voters on Tuesday will pick either Democrat Jodi Habush Sinykin or Republican state Rep. Dan Knodl to represent the 8th Senate District. The seat represents Milwaukee’s northern suburbs. It came open in November after longtime incumbent Alberta Darling chose to retire. The stakes are enormous. A Knodl win would give Senate Republicans enough votes to convict civil officers in impeachment trials. Knodl has said that he doesn’t want to impeach Evers but he does want to oust judges that set low bail for defendants, including liberal state Supreme Court candidate Janet Protasiewicz.
