4-6-23 usda proposes less milk through wic program

Got milk?  You may have less if the U.S. Department of Agricuilture gets its way.  The USDA has proposed dropping by as much as 25 percent the amount of milk that mothers and children receive each month through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.   Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says its not as drastic a cut as it may seems.  “If you have a one year old in our WIC program, right now they get four gallons of milk per month.  They’re proposing to go down to three gallons,”  Mueller told WFDL news.  The USDA says the cuts are “science-based” recommendations.  Mueller points out aside from milk reductions the USDA has proposed other changes including more fruits and vegetables, decreasing juice for children 1-4 years old by half  and banning flavored milk.
