8-18-23 commission won’t tell wisconsin’s top elections official whether to appear at reappointment hearing

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Elections Commission has declined to vote on whether the top elections official should appear before a state Senate hearing on her reappointment. It’s the latest in an ongoing fight over who will lead elections in the critical battleground state ahead of the 2024 presidential race. Meagan Wolfe will decide whether she will testify in front of Republicans who are trying to force a vote on firing her. Democrats have called the Senate’s actions illegitimate after commissioners deadlocked on Wolfe in June, apparently leaving her to stay in office indefinitely. Wolfe did not say Wednesday whether she will appear at her reappointment hearing, which the Senate has yet to set.
