9-26-23 watchdog files open meetings lawsuit against secret panel studying wisconsin justice’s impeachment

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A liberal watchdog group is suing a secret panel investigating the criteria for impeaching a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice. American Oversight says that the group of former Supreme Court justices assembled by the Republican leader of the state Assembly is subject to the state’s open meetings law. They asked a judge on Monday to force the panel to meet in public. The panel was established to advise Assembly Speaker Robin Vos as he considers taking the unprecedented step of impeaching liberal Justice Janet Protasiewicz, who angered Republicans with her campaign-trail comments in support of abortion rights and calling the state’s legislative electoral maps “rigged.”
