10-12-23 easing marijuana restrictions

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently delivered a recommendation to the Drug Enforcement Administration on marijuana policy that is being hailed as a first step toward easing federal restrictions on the drug.  HHS has recommended that marijuana be moved from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance.  Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it makes sense.   Rescheduling the drug would reduce or potentially eliminate criminal penalties for possession.  Marijuana is currently classified the same as heroin and LSD and Mueller admits that’s not right.  “They put it in the most restrictive (category) and it likely doesn’t need to be there,” Mueller told WFDL news.   Mueller says she agrees with a statement from the chair of the senate finance committee that cannabis policies have been “out of touch with reality.”
