The number of sturgeon spearers braving uncertain ice conditions on the Lake Winnebago System for the opening weekend of the sturgeon spearing season was down significantly. DNR sturgeon biologist Margaret Stadig says by law the DNR can’t cancel the sturgeon spearing season regardless of the ice conditions. Stadig says check with local fishing clubs before you go out on the ice and if you do go out don’t go out alone. “Use your best judgement, make sure you talk to people who know what they’re doing, and have been out there,” Stadig told WFDL news. The season opened Saturday and will continue for 16 days or until harvest caps are reached. Stadig says this is definately an out of the ordinary year.
