A community initiative, the Standing Strong Against Falls Coalition, was launched in Fond du Lac County to tackle the growing issue of fall-related injuries among elderly residents. Paula Condor with Rebuilding Together Fox Valley says falls are a leading cause of injury and hospitalization in Fond du Lac County posing a significant threat to the health and well-being of the community. Wisconsin has the highest death rate due to falls in the country. Potential reasons may be that Wisconsin residents consume high amounts of alochol, which can affect the seriousness of a fall. More people could have catastrophic falls from slipping on ice during the winter. More time is spent indoors because of the cold weather, and data shows most falls happen in the home.
