Dear Editor:
This year, Wisconsinites have faced five constitutional amendments, each more confusing than the last. Just as we did in August at the primary election, I am asking you to vote no on the November 5 constitutional amendment question, and I urge other members of the Ripon area community to do the same. The latest would change the language of our state constitution to restrict our freedom to vote. By replacing “every” citizen with “only” citizens, lawmakers are pushing for stricter proof of citizenship requirements, knowing that many eligible voters can’t easily obtain such documents. This includes birth certificates or driver’s licenses, a particular issue for our elderly community members. It’s a last-minute power grab before voters chose a new legislature under fair maps this November. It’s also another attempt by state legislators to pick their voters and chip away at our rights. When will the state legislature pass policies and work on issues that a majority of Wisconsinites want, like clean drinking water and better-funded schools for our kids? It’s time for the legislature to stop rigging the system and start doing its job. We’ve had enough of these harmful amendments. Vote this one down and stand up for
