Local law enforcement say a proposed bill that would keep 17 year olds out of the adult court system for non-violent offenses makes sense. A bipartisan measure dubbed the second chance bill would change Wisconsin’s law that prosecutes all 17 year olds charged with a crime or municipal ordinance violation as adults. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s captain Rick Olig says the concern is that studies show 17 year olds who are charged as adult are more likely to end up in prison in the future. Olig says it doesn’t make sense to charge 17 year olds arrested for crimes such as underage drinking or disorderly conduct as adults.
