A Republican state representative from Beaver Dam is circulating a bill that would enact stricter placement criteria for violent sex offenders. State representative Mark Born says his bill is in response to the placement of two violent offenders in a town of Leroy home, next to a home where two young children live. After a public outcry and pressure from lawmakers two Dodge County judges ordered the individuals returned to the Sand Ridge treatment facility until a more suitable location could be found. Born’s bill would require the offender not be placed within 1500 feet of any school, child care facility, youth center, church or public park and not at a property next to a residence where children live. In addition there would have to be consultation between local law enforcemen and the Department of Health Services and the courts, as well as consultation with the Department of Corrections, Justice and county victim/witness coordinators to determine the location of victims.
