Fond du Lac School District students and staff are mourning the loss of a high school guidance counselor. Matt Heinen was killed in a car crash while driving to work Thursday morning. Heinen lost control of his car on slippery Highway 23 near Whispering Springs Boulevard and veered into the oncoming lane of traffic striking an SUV. He died at the scene. The crash happened shortly before 7:30am Thursday. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Jim Borgen says snow and poor visibility caused by fog appear to be contributing factors. “The westbound vehicle lost control and slid into the eastbound lane causing an eastbound vehicle to strike that vehicle,’ Borgen said. “The driver of the westbound vehicle was deceased at the scene.” Fond du Lac School superintendent Dr. Jim Sebert says the 35 year old Heinen was a tremendous man who will be greatly missed. “Always a smile on his face, very positive, great relationships with students and their families, great rapport with his colleagues,” Sebert told WFDL news. “Just a real positive role model and a great man. Its a significant loss for the district and the high school.” This was Heinen’s second year with the Fond du Lac School District. Sebert says Heinen leaves behind a wife and three young children.
