Marian University will be hosting the 10th annual Dr. Darold A. Treffert Lecture Series on Autism and Savant Syndrome on Monday, April 3 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Sadoff Gymnasium. Dr. Rosa Martinez will serve as the keynote speaker and will present on “Training the Talent.” Dr. Rosa Martinez, Ph.D., is the President and Founder of Strokes of Genius. Strokes of Genius focuses on educating and empowering individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by promoting the abilities in contrast to the disabilities. Strokes of Genius builds and supports artistic talents through the provision of educational art studio experiences to “Train the Talent” and further expand opportunities toward inclusion and independence as a vehicle for the individual’s livelihood. In addition to Dr. Martinez’ presentation, an art demonstration will be given by Ping Lian Yeak. Ping Lian Yeak was the initial inspiration for the creation of Strokes of Genius and the Train the Talent art studio program. Ping Lian came to the United States in 2006 with his mother Sarah Sh Lee and his two older sisters. His artwork was featured at the first “Don’t ‘dis’ the ability” art exhibition at Cooper Union and at The United Nations in 2008. The event open to the public; however, seating is limited. Tickets are $5, and professional development credit is available ($250 per credit). Students are free with a valid student ID. The Dr. Treffert Lecture Series is sponsored in part by The Treffert Center, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Marian University School of Education.
