12-1-17 wisconsin gop proposes shortening statute of limitations

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would shorten the statute of limitations for bringing civil lawsuits.  The measure would shorten the statute of limitations for injury to character from six years to three. The statute of limitations to sue over an injury resulting from property improvements would drop from 10 years to six. The deadline for bringing any other liability or fraud claims would go from six years to three.  The proposal also would allow judges to limit discovery, establish guidelines for loans that consumers would pay back using court awards and allow judges to choose attorneys in class action lawsuits.  The bill’s authors, Reps. Mark Born and John Nygren and Sens. Tom Tiffany and David Craig, say the measure will reduce litigation costs for businesses.
