The African-American pastors of a Fond du lac church say president Donald Trump needs to be held accountable for his comments on racial issues that at the very least have seemed insensitive. Bread of Life Pastor Herbert Haywood says Trump has certainly made some outrageous statements during his first year in office. “Does he say some absolutely mind-boggling, absolutely stupid things? Yes he does. But I also believe he’s a man that is quite different than what we’ve had and maybe be really need him there,” Haywood told AM 1170s Between the Lines program. “We need to hold him accountable, but at the same time, if he’s doing something right than we need to celebrate that just as loudly.” A Pew Research Center survey found that most Americans say Trump’s election has led to worse race relations in the United States. Pastor Bev Haywood says the president’s rhetoric has given voice to some people who have racist beliefs. “When president Trump came on the scene I believe a lot of his conversation gave an open door to those that kept their thoughts at the dinner table,” Pastor Haywood said. The Bread of Life Church led an ecumenical service Monday night in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
