Laurie Holzmann says new audible traffic signals installed this summer during the North Main Street reconstruction project in Fond du Lac will help her cross the street with more confidence. Holzmann has been legally blind since birth, and crosses busy streets daily, often relying on her instincts and the sound of traffic before crossing the street. The new audible signals have been placed at Merrill Avenue and North Main Street and East Johnson and North Main. The signals offer a voice alert that tell a pedestrian when it is safe to cross. The city plans to install the audible signals at other intersections during future projects. October is Meet the Blind month. Thursday was White Cane Awareness Day.
